Transaction Properties Reference

Below you will find a list of transaction properties you can choose when mapping CSV columns when importing custom files.

Transactions

  • Date: Date & Time of the transaction
  • Time: Time of the transaction. Used when it's a separate column. Overrides the time in Date
  • Acquisition date: Day the transferred assets were originally acquired. Incoming Transfer rows only — it is rejected on an outgoing one, and it cannot be later than Date. It sets the holding period, the position's place in FIFO and LIFO ordering, and the FX date used to convert a cost basis given in Price. It does not supply a cost basis of its own, and it does not move the date the position opens in the account. The standard transaction snippet asks for it only once the row resolves to a Transfer In
  • Account: Account this transaction belongs to
  • Asset: Asset this transaction is about
  • Type: Type of Transaction
  • Quantity: Transacted quantity (for Buy, Sell, Transfer) or date's balance (for Account Balance)
  • Quantity (Buy or Sell): Sets two properties at once - Quantity and Type. If the value is positive - a Buy is created, when negative - it's a Sell
  • Price: Transacted price per share (for Buy, Sell, Transfer) or income per share (for Dividend, Interest, Rent). On an interest-priced asset reported as a percentage of face value, a price that came from the file is scaled by face value ÷ 100 on Buy, Sell, Transfer and Convert rows — brokers quote those bonds the same way. The asset's own setting decides this; nothing in the file switches it on. A price Capitally derives from Value ÷ Quantity is already an amount and is left alone
  • Value: Monetary value of the transaction. Can be used instead of the Price (Price will be calculated)
  • Fee: Fees paid
  • Tax Paid: eg. Withholding Tax (WHT)
  • Transaction Tags: Tags applied to the transaction (not to the Asset or Account)
  • Note: Notes in markdown format
  • Fee currency: Currency of the Fee (defaults to Asset's currency)
  • Value currency: Currency of the Value (defaults to Asset's currency)
  • Value & Fee currency: Currency of both Fee and Value
  • Tags
  • Unconfirmed
  • Cash tracking: Whether cash should be tracked or not (defaults to tracking)
  • Reference: Transaction's reference ID (eg. broker's transaction ID). When it is present, duplicate detection matches on asset, account and reference alone instead of comparing values, so a transaction you have edited since importing is still recognised on re-import

Dividends only

  • Dividend Payment Date: Date when dividend was paid out to you. The transaction's Date becomes the dividend's execution date if this is provided.
  • Div Income as Quantity: If dividend was reinvested or was paid out in shares - the amount of shares reinvested or received
  • Div Income as Residual Cash: If dividend was reinvested or was paid out in shares - the residual cash you received
  • Return of Capital: Amount of the distribution that represents a return of invested capital. Reduces cost basis instead of being recorded as income.

Interest only

  • Amortized Quantity: Quantity to be repaid along with the interest (positive for investments and negative for liabilities)

Convert/Move/Spinoff only

  • Target Asset: Asset to convert to. A Convert row needs one — map it to the same asset as Asset to record a move between two accounts
  • Target Account: Account to convert/move to
  • Target Quantity: Quantity to convert to. A Convert row needs one as well; on a move it is the same figure as Quantity
  • Div Income as Residual Cash: one property, two roles — on a Convert row it is the cash paid out instead of target units, on a merger, a partial conversion or a spinoff. On an ordinary conversion it comes out of the cost basis the target receives, and it cannot take that basis below zero. Where Cost Basis % states the target's share on its own it is not deducted a second time, and on a spinoff it adds to the parent's cost basis reduction instead of touching the child

Whether a conversion carries its lots across, and the Cost Basis % allocation, are set in the transaction itself rather than mapped from a column. An import leaves both to Capitally's own reading of the row, which you can change afterwards on the transaction — see Transactions.

Assets

  • Type: Asset type is required
  • Name
  • Currency: Main asset's currency. Required
  • Symbol
  • ISIN
  • Icon
  • Market
  • Country
  • Tags
  • Category, Sectors, Regions: taxonomy assignments. Rarely worth mapping — market-traded assets are given a category automatically from their asset type and market cap, and all three can be changed after the import, in bulk from the Assets tab
  • Market Data Source: Market symbol used for pricing and dividend information
  • Price Interpolation: Should prices for dates without values be interpolated linearly between adjacent dates (common for real estate and anything else you value by hand), or should the last available date be used instead (common for market-traded assets)? It does not apply to interest-priced assets, where the clean-price cascade decides what a date with no quote gets
