Add transactions manually

In Capitally, you have the flexibility to add transactions manually at any time.

From the main menu, select + Add Asset. This option allows you to add any asset from any location.

If you wish to add an asset or transaction in a specific place, navigate to that place in the Portfolio. This could be a specific Account, Market, Asset, or Asset type. Once there, click on the Add Asset Here button. This action will narrow down your asset search and set some transaction defaults.

Picking an Asset

Search for the asset you want to add. You can search for both custom and market-traded assets. Assets that already belong to the project will be marked with a bookmark icon.

Once a new asset is selected, it will be copied over to your project and you will have the freedom to edit it as you wish.

Adding a Transaction

Select the appropriate transaction type first. The names follow the asset rather than a stock trade: Open and Close on a Loan or Mortgage, Credit and Debit on a Deposit, Capital Call on a Private Equity fund, Buy and Sell on ordinary traded assets. On an asset you have only just added to the project, Capitally asks with Choose opening transaction type and lists only the types that can start a position.

After this, select the Account that this transaction will belong to. The Current Quantity field displays the quantity of the selected Asset on that account only.

If you're editing a custom asset, you may want to update its market price for the date of the transaction. You can do this right in the transaction window by clicking the pencil ✏ icon next to the Current Market Price.

Entering a price as a percentage of par

A bond quoted against par can be priced that way directly: the unit selector at the end of the Price field lists % of face value above the currencies, so 95.05 means 95.05% of face value. What Capitally stores is always the amount — typed value × face value ÷ 100 — so a transaction entered either way is the same transaction, and nothing records which way you typed it.

The option shows up only on an interest-priced asset whose price is reported as a percentage of face value, and only while the transaction's value currency is the asset's own — par is denominated in that currency, so a number in any other one can only be an amount. It is on by default when offered, and picking a currency switches back to amounts. The same selector sits on Price (cost-basis) wherever that field appears.

Price on a new opening or closing transaction starts at the asset's face value, again only while the value currency is the asset's own. That is the price the interest schedule is written against, so it is already right for a bond bought at par — overwrite it when you paid a premium or a discount.

Unconfirmed transactions

If your transaction is still pending, but you want to record it anyway (a dividend, transfer you just did, etc.), you can check the Unconfirmed transaction checkbox if necessary. The transaction will be visually marked with an hourglass icon. You can then revisit, correct, and confirm them later.
